ThePit Vipers are the only Viperids located in America. Crotalinae are identified by a heat-detecting sac-like organ (pit) positioned between the eye and nostrils on both sides of the head. Characteristics The hump-nosed viper, Hypnale hypnale, grows to an average total length (including tail) of only 30–45 cm (12–18 in), while the bushmaster, Lachesis muta, reaches a maximum total length of 3.65 m (12.0 ft).
