To be honest I was frustrated with the product. I thought surely this must be a hardware issue with the watch. I was ready to ditch Garmin products for the Apple Watch, despite being a loyal Garmin watch customer for a long time. Even though my watch was out of warranty, I gave Garmin Support a call. They had me take a photo of the charging cable.
I have pretty similar problem with my FR245: often, when I charge my watch using computer, my watch face and its settings are gone. I need to re-install the watch face and do the settings again, which is really time consuming process This is not an issue when I charge my watch using a battery bank.
I get something like this when the watch is connected and charging from my computer. If plugged in to a wall charger, the display will be like this where you can still control the watch buttons and touchscreen while it's charging. This is not a vivoactive 3 but should be similar on your watch.
